Stepping into the world of Dr. Feelgood this is far more than a simple musical tribute. It's an unflinching and deeply personal glimpse into the life, times, thoughts, and goals of Wilko Johnson, a biography crafted with raw honesty. While Wilko's electrifying music is acknowledged as fantastic and performed with palpable excitement, the play's true focus lies squarely on the man himself, transcending the image of the dazzling, albeit fleetingly famous, RnB Guitarist.

The narrative masterfully navigates the extraordinary final decade of Wilko's life, beginning with the harrowing cancer diagnosis in 2012 that gave him just 12 months to live. We witness his defiant refusal of chemotherapy, his acclaimed collaboration on a hit album with Roger Daltrey, and the sold-out farewell tour that cemented his place in the public imagination, earning him a moniker 'the greatest living Englishman' from the press.

Johnson Willis delivers an absolutely excellent portrayal of Wilko, capturing his iconic demeanor with precision. The play doesn't shy away from Wilko's more challenging traits – his reputation as a handful and his intentional, often brutal, insults towards nearly everyone are authentically presented, a fact he clearly accepted both in life and in the script. Undoubtedly, his loyal and devoted wife Irene, portrayed by Georgina Fairbanks with great emotion, was the one who endured the brunt of his foul mood.

The portrayal of Lee Brilleaux by Jon House is nothing short of magnetic. As Wilko's crucial musical counterpart, House's Brilleaux forms the core dynamic of the show, complemented by the steadfast presence of Willis who portrays Wilko throughout. The rhythm section is equally compelling: David John is Big Figure and Georgina Field is exceptional in her role as Sparko. Together, this central quartet genuinely create a cohesive and vibrant sound.

The show culminates in an unforgettable encore, bringing the energy to a fever pitch. The inclusion of a guest performer every night – with names like Norman Watt-Roy, Bob Geldof and others adds to the theatre goer's excitement, and even on one night, Wilko's own son played. Truly a must see.
