Pinecone Performance Lab's musical, The Queen is Mad, boldly reclaims the narrative of Joanna I of Castile, often dismissed as "Joanna the Mad." This powerful production asserts that Joanna was not insane, but rather "furious" – a victim of patriarchal power plays by her father and husband who sought to usurp her rightful throne.

At its heart, the musical delves into the tragic saga of Joanna (Natasha Hoeberigs), introduced as a spirited young woman stifling under her father Ferdinand’s (Alan Vicary) oppressive control. Her arranged marriage to Philip (Brian Raftery) initially appears to be an escape, a chance to seize control of her own life. However, this hope quickly crumbles, setting off a devastating chain of events that sees her unjustly locked away, labelled mad by the very court and country she was destined to rule.

Natasha Hoeberigs is nothing short of captivating as Joanna. She instantly endears herself to the audience, expertly guiding us through Joanna's complex emotional journey with remarkable aplomb. Her skilful vocals are a highlight, particularly in the dramatic climax of the song ‘Locked Away’, showcasing the depth of Joanna’s despair and fury. Brian Raftery brings a crackling, dangerous energy to his portrayal of Philip, while Alan Vicary masterfully embodies Ferdinand, cutting a menacing figure yet surprisingly reducing the audience to fits of giggles with his comedic delivery of the repeatedly-sung line ‘King Ferdinand’. Both Raftery and Vicary seamlessly transition into other ensemble roles, although the narrative remains tightly focused on Joanna's interactions with these two pivotal men.

The true beating heart of The Queen is Mad lies in its exceptional musical score. With poignant lyrics from writer-director Amy Clare Tasker and musical director Tom James McGrath, and stirring music also from McGrath, the songs are arguably the show's greatest strength. It's a must-see for anyone interested in history, powerful storytelling, or simply a night of exceptional musical theatre.
